We are now six months into what was supposed to be a two-month building envelope project in our townhouse/apartment complex. Throughout this process, residents have faced numerous issues due to sheer carelessness and lack of professionalism. These include:
Flooding incidents, due to lack of concern prior to a predicted Atmospheric River weather
Wires being drilled through and cut, causing electrical hazards.
Dryer vents being disconnected.
Gaps left open to the outside for months after cutting around interior windows for replacement.
When replacing windows, all windows on one side of four units were removed at once, leaving residents without windows in the winter for up to 6-8 hours while the new windows were being installed. When the windows and sliding doors were eventually replaced, they were not properly checked by either the installers or anyone from Signia, leading to many windows being uneven, with gaps and non-functional locks. Some units were left unable to lock their windows over the weekend, leaving residents vulnerable. Some are still in need of adjustments.
Furthermore, the cuts and holes made in the interior walls of the closets we were asked to empty for the installation of new exterior hose bibs still haven't been repaired, even though the bibs were installed months ago. Today, we were informed that the partially installed siding will need to be removed. It's rumored that this is due to the use of incorrect fireproofing material, which clearly violates building codes. As a result, the Tyvek and sheathing will also need to be removed, effectively returning the project to its demolition state.
As of now, there has been no exterior work done in our section for four weeks, and manpower on-site has been consistently minimal. At the start of the project, we were told there would be 30 workers on-site. However, the posted permit states only seven, and we’re lucky to see three workers at a time. They primarily seem to hire demo crews who continually move from phase to phase, demolishing but not completing any of the work. No unit in the first phase is close to completion.
Additionally, the mess they leave around the complex is unacceptable, with nails scattered everywhere. Several residents have now reported tire leaks—hardly a coincidence, in my opinion. This only highlights their ongoing carelessness.
Given today’s notice, it’s now apparent that what was supposed to be a two-month project could stretch out to as long as nine months. Residents are frustrated, feeling powerless, and defeated by the lack of progress, especially at the prospect of enduring the noise of sheathing and siding installation again, along with the potential for more issues like wires being drilled through or dryer vents getting disconnected. This company has shown itself to be unprofessional, careless, and unreliable. If you're planning a building envelope project for your complex and expect quality work completed on schedule, DO NOT HIRE SIGNIA.
