I have been building a house on the west end of the island, and I have an RV in my driveway to function as a temporary kitchen. I have been hounded by the planning board for over a year to remove it, and now fines are threatened. If you want to self build a home in northern Ontario, I now recommend skipping Manitoulin Island. There is vast unorganized land in North Algoma District and some land just one hour from Sault Ste. Marie, which is a great source of supplies.
I believe there is some form of protectionism happening on the island, and this planning board appears to have been weaponized.
I have put over $100,000 into the pockets of locals while building this home myself, so I'm in disbelief of the actions of the planning board.

You have to wonder who is pulling the strings here? Ontario has a critical housing shortage and affordability problem. My self build youtube channel has been viewed primarily by over 1000 males over 55 years of age from Toronto area. They are surely looking for a path out of Toronto, but after viewing my videos, they may take their money elsewhere.
