Most homeowners have a renovation story. This one has a happy ending. For context, our reno was all interior and mostly cosmetic, but extensive. We updated every surface of the home including a redesigned kitchen and primary bathroom and added several architectural details.
Reno’s take time and usually run over budget. It’s impossible to know all the challenges you will face until you see what’s behind the walls, ceiling and floors. Add to this, the challenge of getting the trades you need, precisely when you need them. While not easy to manage, as home owners we still expect good quality workmanship completed in a timely manner.
Our project turned out beautifully with Alair Homes. Yes, it took extra time to complete but there were contributing factors including changes to the scope by us. From start to finish we had strong confidence in the people and process of Alair. Stu Hopewell and his team have a talented network of subtrades. They kept an open and honest dialogue with us throughout the project. The Alair process includes real-time access to the project spend and transparent view of each sub trade and supplier invoice which provided further comfort. Alair also took full accountability when a couple things didn’t go as promised and were very reasonable in resolving them to our satisfaction.
No renovation or contractor is perfect but this is our 5th major Reno and we can confidently say Alair has been one of the best.
It comes down to the people. Stu and his team are skilled and trustworthy - the two most critical requirements for any home renovation project. If you are considering a Reno, we highly recommend Alair.

I would recommend Alair. We had a new deck built and timber frame structure, re and re siding (vinyl to Hardie), and a bunch of smaller things. It was not perfect and took a long time but almost all of that was out of Alair’s control and they handled it all very well. When they made an error, they did not hesitate to take responsibility and address it. I think it was a challenging job - but the final product is excellent.

We had Alair Homes Nanaimo build our retirement dream home for us, and we could not have been happier with the results. We were worried at the start of the process as we lived in Ottawa while our house was being built, but our Project Manager Matt was absolutely fantastic in keeping us up-to-date with everything. Matt or Stu called us a few times every week to tell us how things were progessing, they sent pictures of ongoing construction and they were extremely patient with our numerous questions.

Alair simplify and clarify the daunting prospect of building a home. They navigate you through the maze of problems that occur and objectives to build your home. As a unit they perform incredibly well, individually Graeme Carlton is like the head on a good Guinness; rises to the top. He works tirelessly and possesses wonderful people skills. He keeps you in touch with the reality of the build and doesn't sugar coat anything. He involves you in every aspect of the build without putting any of the stress of building on you. I would recommend him and Alair to anyone and everyone if they are considering building a house in Nanaimo. They have managed to build my dream home on time, on budget and the standard of work is very high. I am amazed at the standard and professional attitude of the local trades that are contracted by Alair. The trades all spoke highly of working with Alair and enjoy the clarity that Alair provides to the different contracts. All this during Covid, it is an amazing thing to have been a part of.

My only failure was not convincing Graeme to support a decent soccer team :).
